Preparing for your trip

How to Get Here
Grand Cayman is 480 miles south of Miami. Cayman Airways (1-800-G-CAYMAN, in Canada 1-800-441-3003); American; US Airways, Delta, Continental and Northwest Airlines connect from several cities including Miami, Houston, Orlando and Atlanta; British Airways flies direct from London; and there are many other charters. Connecting cities change regularly, so check with your travel agent.

Sunset House, just south of George Town, is a short taxi ride from the airport.

Immigration, customs & currency
Clearing immigration and customs in Grand Cayman is easy; they are friendly and efficient. You must also clear customs on returning to the U.S. so don’t plan a tight airline connection. You should have a passport otherwise you will need an embossed birth certificate or embossed voter’s registration and photo ID, and you may risk delays.

Currency
Traveler’s checks are accepted, as well as credit cards and U.S. currency. The Cayman Islands’ dollar is worth U.S. $1.25. All prices in this brochure are in U.S. dollars.

Checklist of things to do Ahead of Time
• Make course reservations and send your deposit and a copy of your C-card to Cathy Church.
• Make airline reservations! DON’T DELAY!
• Get passport several weeks in advance. There are companies that can get you a passport in just a few days.
• Check out photo equipment. Charge, discharge and recharge full any rechargeable strobes that haven’t been used for more than a month.
• Test new equipment underwater (pool will do).
• Evaluate need for prescription lenses in dive mask. Contact Cathy if you need advice for photographers needs. Contact www.prescriptiondivemasks.com for info.

Things to know about what to bring with you
Traveling Items

* Passport or embossed birth certificate and photo ID.

* Travelers' checks, cash and/or credit card.

* Airline ticket, round trip

Personal Items

(in addition to normal toiletries, etc.)

* Shorts for casual wear, light shirts or blouses, sun hat for warm, humid climate.

* Long slacks, or dress for ladies is optional for eating out. Most restaurants welcome shorts. (Men do not need coat or tie)

* Sandals or thongs (wear them a bit ahead of time).

* At least two swim suits--much of the day is spent in swim suit and tee shirt.

* Sun hat

* Lightweight rain jacket for boat or town.

* Sunscreen lotion.

* Decongestant--if needed. Sudafed is good for a dive trip. If you have trouble clearing, give up milk products two days before the class starts.

* Ear rinse. Three parts vinegar to one part alcohol works well to prevent "Swimmer's ear."

* Antihistamine, if you are allergic to bee stings, coral, etc.

* If you are sharing a room, bring appropriate night clothes

Diving gear

* Certification card (and Nitrox card if you have one.)

* Diving mask. Get prescription lenses if you need them! See note in Things to do Ahead.

* Snorkel.

* Regulator with pressure gauge. Have it serviced if it leaks or needs cleaning.

* Alternate air source is required (Octopus, BCAir II, etc.)

* B.C. with auto inflator. If your BC uses Integrated weights, keep in mind that they make it difficult for photography so bring a belt if you have one. (I'll explain more later.)

* Fins (and booties or socks depending on fin type). Booties make your feet float, so smaller, full-foot fins are best. If you are getting ready to buy fins, please AVOID the split fin and Force Fins™. These are not good for small maneuvers needed for good U/W photo control.

* Depth gauge or dive computer.

* Small U/W light that can be strapped or taped to your strobe. Large lights cannot be used efficiently.

* Dive skin, thin, 1/8" or 3/16", or wetsuit if you chill easily, some dives last up to three hours.

* Dive watch.

* (Optional) If you pack in a large SCUBA bag that should not get wet, pack a small net bag to hold SCUBA gear on the boat during the week.

 Camera Gear

* Assemble entire system to be sure you have everything.

* Bring owner's manuals, especially for new digital cameras.

* Pack spare parts, or tools unique to your gear.

* All new batteries for cameras, meters, strobes, etc. (Batteries are available at our photo centre.) Battery chargers.

* Film (Film is available at the photo centre.) (See Equipment and film needs.) Media card.

*Laptop computer with catalogue and editing programs

* Loupe (Optional--we have several in the photo centre but it's nice to have your own.)
