    • Environmental Issues

Grand Cayman is proposing the construction of a new cruise berthing facility that would totally remove the lovely wreck of the Balboa, one of my long time favorite places for teaching underwater photography. The dredging would also directly impact Soto’s Reef and Eden Rock — annual home to the incredible masses of silversides and tarpon. Silt from the dredging operations would expand for months as far as Sunset House where I teach and dive and could possibly smother and kill it.

All of the environmental impact assessment clearly points all of this out, and also details the type of economic improvement for the island.

We have formed a protest group called SaveCayman.org which points out the fallacy of destroying the very reefs that are the most popular for our cruise ship customers, etc. etc. and the severe economic fallout from so much environmental destruction as well as crowds, traffic, noise, and so on ad infinitum.

Cathy's Crew

Herb Rafael

Herb Rafael and Cathy were married in 1991. Herb was the backbone of the development of the photo centre from a small basement shop that did not even sell film into a world-class, two-story camera store and photo service centre. He grew up in Brooklyn and studied culinary arts and hotel management before starting a second career in retail. Retirement was boring, so he devotes is full energies to the photo centre where he enjoys making sure that customers are happy with their experience with us and is quick to answer questions about how we can fill their needs. You can often find him in the company of a very sweet Labradoodle named Jasmin, although she is no longer this deep brown, but is now gray with a few dabs of brown.

Jenn Mark

Jenn was born and raised in California and first worked in Grand Cayman from 1998-2003. She worked at the Photo Centre back in the days when she still shot with a Nikonos V and a Nikon F100. She moved back to California for seven years and decided she missed the islands and the diving too much, so she returned in 2010. Jenn has been diving since 1987 and has been a PADI instructor since 1999. She returned to the Cayman Islands after talking her husband, Tony, into the island lifestyle. Jenn and Tony welcomed the birth of Justine in July 2013. She does a fabulous job managing our Centre and is always happy to help.

Jenn is also the logistics co-ordinator of CayFilm, Cayman International Film Festival founded by our own Tony Mark.

Tony Mark

Tony hails from sunny southern California. He has been a photographer and filmmaker for 20 years. He was formally trained at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and has over 20 years experience working in Hollywood in feature films and television. Tony's talents have won him an Emmy in film editing and several awards in both filmmaking and photography. He fell in love with Grand Cayman above and below the water while on vacation with his wife, Jenn, who just happens to be the Photo Centre manager.

Tony started diving in 2007 and has a PADI divemaster certification. Tony teaches all of our videography and editing classes. He also does our wedding and event photography and videography, using a Nikon D4 and a Sony video system. He is a great dad and is often seen holding his baby Justine whenever he has a minute while waiting for videos to render.

Tony is the founder and director of CayFilm Cayman International Film Festival, which launched in 2015.

Max Flores

Max was born and raised in La Ceiba, Honduras. He is a Graphic Designer specialized in Digital printing, branding / brand identity design, illustration, web design and photography, among others. He has a passion for all sorts of arts such as music, drawing, etc. In 2015, he found a spot in Cathy Church's Photo Centre, where you can find him designing and producing fabulous prints for Cathy and our happy customers.

 Adeline Wee

Adeline, or Addie, as she is frequently referred to, hails from Singapore and has been a dive instructor since 2002. She has dived extensively in Asia where she was introduced to underwater photography. If she is not busy shooting underwater, you can find her on land enjoying bird photography.

She was a very popular Underwater Photography instructor at Cathy Church's from 2009 - 2012 and we are delighted that she is back with our team! In her words "Working with Cathy Church has been a real eye-opener for me and I am constantly growing and learning new skills." Her award-winning photos from both underwater and above water can be seen on her Facebook page Adeline Wee Photos. Addie is keen to help you take your underwater photography to the next level.

Lin Fronda

Lin is one of Herb's retail angels who is also a graphic artist and event photographer. Originally from the Philippines, she spent two years working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia before coming to Grand Cayman in 2006. She has experience shooting weddings, products in studio and outdoor events; Lin knows her way around Photoshop, Pagemaker, Freehand and Illustrator. She looks forward to diving more, learning more and seeing more of the world through her own eyes and camera lenses.

Maria DelasAlas

Maria hails from Manila, Philippines. She came to work in Grand Cayman in 2006. In 2011, she found a spot at Cathy Church’s as a Photo Centre Assistant and her interest in photography was sparked. She earned her Divemaster certificate in 2013. Maria now works as one of our Underwater Photographers as well as helping in the Photo Centre. In her spare time, she does infrared photography and works in her garden.

Jim Catlin

Jim first became interested in underwater photography over 13 years ago when working as a volunteer on a marine expedition to Fiji. Over the last decade this passion has grown into a profession.

After completing an MSc in marine science in 2008 studying the endangered Bumphead Parrotfish, Jim worked in the Caribbean and Egypt for various marine conservation NGO’s, carrying out marine surveys and training graduates and volunteers in marine flora and fauna identification. His underwater photographs from Tobago were used by Coral Cay Conservation to help promote marine awareness throughout the Caribbean and images from the Turks and Caicos Islands appeared in Caribbean Reef Magazine, including the cover shot for their first edition.

As a Reef Check course director, Jim’s photos have also been published in ‘The Transect Line’ and various scientific journals, including a cover for Methods in Ecology and Evolution in 2013. Previously Jim was working in Thailand as a professional photographer/ videographer and underwater photography instructor on board a dive liveaboard in the South Andaman Sea. He always wanted to move back to the Caribbean and now has the opportunity to improve and grow as an underwater photographer in the Cayman Islands. See Jim's portfolio on his website at www.jimcatlinphotography.com.

 Theunis Neethling

Theunis is back!! Tee (as we all him) hails from South Africa. He has worked with us from 2009 to 2016 and was able to come back in 2017 after having been away for a year. He can do just about everything--especially teaching all levels of underwater photography and all types of cameras. He handles all kinds of repairs and fix-its, internet issues, and can even print and frame gallery images. He is a NAUI SCUBA instructor and is also the captain of Cathy's charter boat. He is truly a man of ALL trades and fun to be with.

Hayley Leggatt

Hayley was born in the Isle of Man and came back to Grand Cayman just before she turned a year old. She is a true Island girl and loves to take photos of the local flora and fauna. She graduated from St. Ignatius Catholic school. She got her C card as part of the P.E program at school. She has been playing the Steel Pan since she was ten years old and has a love of the islands and its culture.

Barbara McKenzie

Ever wondered who has worked for Cathy for the longest? The answer is Barbara (sorry for those of you that guessed Herb!). Barbara moved to Grand Cayman from Jamaica in 1987 and met Cathy through Barbara's cousin, who worked for Cathy at the time. Her cousin then moved to the US, so Barbara filled the gap. She keeps our shops, offices and Cathy and Herb's home spotless and runs her own cleaning company. Barbara also works her magic on Cathy's gallery prints by matting and mounting them so they are ready for you to buy. She has two daughters in Jamaica who come most summers to visit, and Barbara goes back when she can - and when she does we miss her singing!

Justine Mark

Although Justine is the youngest member of the staff, she is well versed in cameras, especially her Fisher Price talking one. Feel free to ask her questions -- she can count to ten and has a growing vocabulary that only her mother really understands. She is probably the most photographed baby ever and she is usually up for a cuddle

She is now FOUR years old and speaks quite well and has a very adult sense of values!! She gets that from her mother.
