As a child, Cathy Church was an avid biologist and bird watcher. She earned a BS in biology from the University of Michigan where she learned to SCUBA dive. She was studying marine biology at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine biology station in Monterey, California when she met Jim Church, a scuba diver who was pioneering underwater photography and writing for Skin Diver Magazine in the early 60s. • Most people do not have the time to lobby, study, fund, and fix our environmental problems. By yourself, your tiny little voice will get lost and misplaced. But when we form massive groups, we can flex enough muscle to fix virtually anything!

Everyone Should Support Three Environmental Organizations:

      -- One World-Wide  -- One Nation-Wide  -- One Local

We Cannot Join Them All, So You Must Pick And Choose Your Battles.

I have personally chosen two battles: stop shark finning and save leatherback turtles. You may choose to protect elephants from poachers, or stop over fishing. But concentrate on one thing and do something -- anything, over and over.

There is no single cause that is more important than another, as they all work together.

For shark finning, I support http://www.sharktrust.org, an effective UK group. Many of you contributed to my request for money to install billboards in China where the famous Chinese basketball player Yao Ming is pictured asking everyone to just say no to shark fin soup. We collected enough $20 donations to pay for 100 billboards! This campaign was immensely successful. Collectively that money worked well.

Enjoy the best of both worlds:
Three nights at Sunset House Hotel and
a week in Little Cayman/Cayman Brac aboard the Cayman Aggressor V
with Cathy Church teaching and helping everyone get photos underwater.

June 24 - 27 at Sunset House, and June 27 to July 4, 2020 on Cayman Aggressor V

Cathy Church photo centre and her wonderful instructors.

Arrival Day at Sunset House is June 24, 2020: Cathy and three staff meet with you individually to review camera settings and help you perform a complete function test of your assembled camera system as you follow the instructions from a handout e-mailed to you in advance. After we help you test, adjust, and add whatever you might need to make your system as functional as possible underwater you may just relax or go for a shore dive with a buddy to check everything out. There will be orientation and a pizza party dinner that evening at the photo centre-- or maybe outdoors.

Cathy has the world's most experienced underwater photo centre with two veteran instructors: Theunis Neethling and Lisa Collins--both of whom have been teaching underwater photography for well over ten years. This special land/sea combo combines the best diving resort with the best live-aboard in the Cayman Islands.

Land plan

The style will be much like the very popular Cathy Church Photo Fest weeks held annually at Sunset House. But this special week has only three nights on land and a week at sea, and it has a smaller group of only 18 guests.

June 25 and 26: The group will be diving from two Sunset Diver dive boats that leave around 8 am with nine guests plus one instructor on each boat to help you above and underwater. Cathy, as amazing as she is, can only be on one boat per day. Of course you will love the usual Cathy Church style three-hour dives on a shallow reef to relax, and get used to your camera system and plan your photos. When your tank runs low, just go back to the boat and the wonderful Sunset Divers crew will change it to a fresh tank while you enjoy a drink of water and you go right back down.

Choose from assorted activities in the afternoon: photo lecture??, Lightroom lessons??, shore diving??, critique??, sleep??

AND we ALL leave our politics behind. No Politics or religion will even be mentioned during this trip!! No hint, no comment, no jokes.

The sea portion

The new 120' Cayman Aggressor V has 7 crew. There are 3 twin and 5 deluxe cabins and 2 balcony suites, each with individual air conditioning, en suite facilities and hairdryer.

The public areas are all big on this boat. The dive deck is huge and entirely shaded. There are two large double shelved camera tables and diving is done from the stern platform. The boat is always moored to the dive site, so there is no travel time between gearing up and being underwater.

The Salon is also HUGE

There is plenty of room to relax with your computer and look at your photos, assemble cameras, or just read. Cathy meets with those who need to solve problems, share ideas, or just chat. There are no rules except to be polite.

More areas to relax

Between dives nap in the shade on the sun deck, or on cushioned lounges in the sun, or even in a Jacuzzi!

Dining

Every day starts with a cooked to order breakfast then a buffet lunch. Dinner is served with elegant table-side service featuring salads, vegetables, seafood, beef or chicken with a fresh homemade dessert.

Fresh produce is readily available and their menu includes variety to suit all tastes and diets.

Now for the important parts--The underwater photography opportunities!!

 Diving starts in Grand Cayman

Our first dives in Grand Cayman will start with a long three-hour shallow macro dive. You can relax and let the creative ideas flow and spend enough time to get the subject just right and to get your buoyancy and camera systems fine tuned. On the second day we will do a wall dive for the unique photos available at Orange Canyon or NW point or even Big Tunnel.

In Little Cayman, the wall starts shallow and you can stay there for a long time, or drop down into deeper water and explore the sheer vertical drop-off. No where else is there diving just like the Bloody Bay Wall of Little Cayman! It is easy, plentiful, and gorgeous. Bring your wide angle lens for scenic photos and your macro too, and your medium lens for fish and your video for the groupers, and your big memory cards and extra batteries for quick change between dives and your Nitrox card! Every one must be Nitrox certified so you can enjoy more leisurely diving and less fatigue.

 Schooling fish

Colorful sponges
Turtles
Curious groupers

Yes, this web page is being built all by myself (Cathy) and I have almost zero training in Joomla, but this is as good as I can do for now. the important thing is that you learn about how great this trip is for a Cayman underwater photo experience with me--the one, the only Cathy Church. Hip, hip hooray. Do I go to far--probably.

Photography trips with Cathy Church

The best reason to join Cathy on a dive trip is because she brings along EXTRA back-up camera gear in case YOU have a breakdown! The best insurance policy ever! She will contact each guest in advance to find out exactly what you are bringing, and will ask you to send a photo of the assembled system (unless she has already known your system from earlier classes and trips). She can then plan her back-up systems accordingly.

Cathy will be available throughout this trip to answer questions, help with problems, critique as needed to troubleshoot or just to admire your photos. If you have topics in particular that you would like Cathy to do a presentation on, Cathy is quite happy to do that on the boat. However, sometimes the best learning is one-on-one at your computer discussing your photos.

And one more advantage, Cathy is there to make sure that you are getting the care you need, the dives you want, and the services above and underwater that you are expecting. Cathy is also there in case another guest is making you feel uncomfortable or is disrupting your ability to enjoy the trip. Fortunately, Cathy has been called upon to do this only about three times in her more than 50 trips, but Cathy has nipped several issues in the bud before anyone even knew about it.
