We Cannot Join Them All, So You Must Pick And Choose Your Battles.

I have personally chosen two battles: stop shark finning and save leatherback turtles. You may choose to protect elephants from poachers, or stop over fishing. But concentrate on one thing and do something -- anything, over and over.

There is no single cause that is more important than another, as they all work together.

For shark finning, I support http://www.sharktrust.org, an effective UK group. Many of you contributed to my request for money to install billboards in China where the famous Chinese basketball player Yao Ming is pictured asking everyone to just say no to shark fin soup. We collected enough $20 donations to pay for 100 billboards! This campaign was immensely successful. Collectively that money worked well.

W-XXX: Underwater Photography Part 1 -- an easy start from A(perture) to Z(oom)*

This 3-hour workshop is for beginners or intermediate photographers who want to especially learn what settings are optimum to make lovely photos with any camera. It includes information for divers using advanced SLR cameras for the first time and cameras such as Sealife, Olympus Tough and other cameras with limited or no f-stop and shutter speed controls.

It is also excellent for those who want to get started by using automatic/program modes rather than full manual exposure controls, or for those who are taking both workshops this week-end.

It will cover how to use the best settings for better background exposures and prettier foregrounds, optimum white balance settings, use of add-on lenses, understanding depth of field, best techniques for optimum focus, when to use zoom or wider lenses, etc. You will learn Cathy's favorite creative lighting techniques for more beautiful photos with any system.

This is a hands-on workshop, so you should bring your camera with you (and an extra battery and your owner's manual if possible.) Please e-mail Cathy right away atThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and tell her what brand and model of camera and housing you have. She will prepare a handout specifically for your camera to make sure that you will know how to find each setting that she discusses.

As the brochure says "Cathy takes a complex topic and makes it clear. Her humorous, easy-to-understand approach has made her the country's most popular photo instructor.”

If you want the next lesson on using strobes, and more advanced techniques to get those extra special creative photos take Cathy's second workshop previously called "Creative Underwater Lighting, then she called it "Mastering Underwater lighting" and currently "Lighting--tried and true and cutting edge too."

Cost:  $80 plus $4.79 ticket fee. I think that this workshop fee includes a Saturday wristband which allows admittance to Saturday exhibits and seminars (a $35 value)

From the BTS website, click on green ticket button and scroll down to sign up for the class you want  (W-XXX) or (W-XXX1) or for both classes (WXXX/WXXX Combo) for only $140 + $7.64 fee.

Don't forget to contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.when you sign up and pay the fee. Last minute sign-ups may be possible, and you can pay at the door, but you will not get your handout with the settings Cathy recommends for YOUR particular camera. However she will email last minute handouts to students signing up late.

(W-XXX) UW Photography Part 2: "Lighting--tried and true and cutting edge, too."

Great for beginners and experienced photographers, this amazingly informative workshop covers the use of exposure controls, lighting techniques and equipment choices (for SLR, Mirrorless and compact cameras with external strobes) to create more stunning underwater photos. Topics will cover all aspects of underwater lighting from understanding ambient light to produce great natural light color and black and white photos, to using strobes for primary lighting and for balanced flash fill.

You will learn Cathy's favorite creative lighting techniques with ultra-close-ups and when to use single or multiple strobes for more beautiful wide angle photos. If you do not already know what an f-stop and shutter speed are, please email her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for a two-page handout to read in advance to make your seminar more enjoyable. You will also learn about tools like snoots, diffusers and LED lights.

Photographers without manual exposure controls are welcome to attend XXX if they cannot attend XXX. Although much information will not pertain to your system, you can still learn a lot about lighting styles and about the things you need to consider as you move up to another camera.

It is not necessary to bring your camera housing and strobe system to this workshop unless you will have questions specific to your set up where handling it would be an advantage to your learning.

Ticket Fee: $80 (plus $4.79 ticketing fee) Limit 35. I think that this workshop might include a Saturday wristband which allows admittance to Saturday exhibits and seminars (a $35 value). Their website lists only Friday wristbands.

WOW-- With both workshops  – Fee is only $140 + $7.64 ticketing fee. I think that you get a FREE Friday wristband which allows admittance to exhibits and technical seminars and the Tech/Wreck party AND A FREE wristband for admittance to Sunday exhibits and seminars. (a $70 value) - Best deal of the show!

BTS was the only US workshop venue for Cathy in 2019. But you can still arrange private classes at Sunset House with or without a shore dive, or arrange for a personal lesson via Skype, or join her on a fabulous trip to great dive destinations like Komodo, or Alor in Indonesia, or come to the combo Sunset House/Cayman Aggressor to Little Cayman in Solomon Islands in 2020, or the Maldives 2021.

Links are under construction for these next great trips.

“UW Photography Part 2: "Lighting--tried and true and cutting edge, too." — great for beginners and experienced photographers.*

This amazingly informative workshop covers the use of exposure controls with SLR, Mirrorless and compact cameras with external strobes to create more stunning underwater photos.Topics will cover all aspects of underwater lighting from understanding ambient light to produce great natural light color and black and white photos, to using strobes for primary lighting and for balanced flash fill.
