    • Environmental Issues

Grand Cayman is proposing the construction of a new cruise berthing facility that would totally remove the lovely wreck of the Balboa, one of my long time favorite places for teaching underwater photography. The dredging would also directly impact Soto’s Reef and Eden Rock — annual home to the incredible masses of silversides and tarpon. Silt from the dredging operations would expand for months as far as Sunset House where I teach and dive and could possibly smother and kill it.

All of the environmental impact assessment clearly points all of this out, and also details the type of economic improvement for the island.

We have formed a protest group called SaveCayman.org which points out the fallacy of destroying the very reefs that are the most popular for our cruise ship customers, etc. etc. and the severe economic fallout from so much environmental destruction as well as crowds, traffic, noise, and so on ad infinitum.

Olympus OMD EM-1II

This is the top of the line Olympus mirrorless camera with some incredible features!

The camera is available in Olympus or Nauticam housings, but we do not carry it in stock. We special order it for your arrival in Cayman where we show you how to use it in a free set-up lesson.

What makes the OMD-EM1II great for underwater photography and video? ...

• The all new large micro 4/3rds 20.4 MP Live MOS sensor produces very SHARP, clear images suitable for large prints.

* ISO up to 25,600 for great low light performance

• Cinematic 4K video at 24fps and high bit rate (237Mbps)

• Dual 5 axis sensor and lens stabilization for smooth video and stable macro. Up to 5.5 stops!

• It focuses and shoots fast with 121 AF points using a dual AF system for great accuracy. You can take up to 60 fps for natural light pelagic action, 15fps in RAW.

• 5 customizable function buttons to help you set up the controls YOU need for easy access underwater

• Easily moved point of focus and focus peaking, essential for video and great for macro photography

• Flash sync to 1/320th for more ambient light control

• Compact add-on flash inside the housing provides full TTL strobe exposure with an external strobe underwater via a convenient fiber optic cord.

• Built-in Wifi for image transfer to your phone or tablet even through the housing! This also allows the remote control of your camera from your phone or tablet (topside only!)

• The camera is completely weather proofed. Multiple rubber seals protect it from sand, dust, rain and water spray. While it will not survive being immersed in salt-water, it is much safer in an open environment where water spray or dripping hands may ruin other cameras.

• Separate, easier, one-step dials for full manual and program exposure controls instead of a sequence of buttons as used in the older EPL models.

• Great lens support in the Nauticam housing for micro 4/3rds lenses from Olympus and Panasonic!

The combination of the terrific 12 - 50mm lens and option of various add-on wet lenses all utilizing the same ONE port make this a fully versatile system!

PROS of Nauticam housing over Olympus housing

• The built-in electronic viewfinder allows full "SLR" style focusing and composing only when used with the 180º viewfinder on the Nauticam housing. Click here for more information on this feature.

• The Nauticam housing port allows you to use the incredible macro switch on the 12 - 50 mm lens, which is fantastic for close-up underwater photography and focuses as close as 2 inches! The lens provides wide 84º coverage (equivalent to a 24mm lens on a 35mm film camera) for medium wide-angle photography down to a narrow 24º coverage (comparable to a 100mm lens with 35mm film) for fish and small subjects. In macro mode you can fill the frame with a subject as small as 1 1/4 inches wide. It is a wonderful, all-around lens. This lens cannot be used to the same extent in the Olympus housing which does not have a zoom gear or the macro switch!

• This port will also house the Olympus 60mm macro lens for those who love super macro!

• 5 customizable function buttons on housing including additional front located customizable button (Pv) giving more control options

• On/Off flash switch is available through the housing – great if you are underwater and have forgotten to turn it on! Also easy to turn flash off without going into the menu.

• Built-in moisture alarm system is standard. Electronics for vacuum system is included. While this requires extra tools and effort, it does mean the housing is secure. (Vacuum valve and pump available separately.)

• Elegant and simple port locking system makes changing lenses and ports a breeze.

• Larger dials are better placed and easier to use.

• Optional, easy-to use add-on close-up lenses (Olympus, Nauticam and Reef Net). They are used with a flip holder to hold the add-on lens in place or out of the way.

CONS of Nauticam housing

• More expensive than the Olympus housing

• Much heavier above and underwater, so you need to get the correct buoyancy arms.

•It takes a little more space than an Olympus housing in your baggage, especially with the 180º viewfinder, but still a lot less than a housed DSLR.
